HSK vs HSKK: What's the Difference and Which One Do You Need?
If you're new to Chinese proficiency testing, seeing both "HSK" and "HSKK" on university or visa requirements is confusing. They test different things, they're scored separately, and most learners only ever need one of them.
HSK: reading, listening, and writing
HSK (Hanyu Shuiping Kaoshi) is the standard written/aural proficiency test, with 6 levels from basic communication (HSK 1) to near-native fluency (HSK 6). HSK 1–2 test Listening and Reading; from HSK 3 onward a Writing section is added. This is the certificate almost every university admission, scholarship, or employment requirement is actually referring to.
HSKK: speaking only
HSKK (Hanyu Shuiping Kouyu Kaoshi) is a separate, dedicated speaking exam with just 3 levels — Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced. It's not required by most standard admission requirements, but it can matter for specific programs (Chinese-language teaching, translation/interpretation) or scholarships that explicitly ask for spoken proficiency proof.
How they map to each other
- HSK 1–2 ↔ HSKK Beginner
- HSK 3–4 ↔ HSKK Intermediate
- HSK 5–6 ↔ HSKK Advanced
They're taken and certified independently, though — passing HSK 4 doesn't automatically certify HSKK Intermediate. If a program specifically requires HSKK, you'll need to sit that exam separately.
Which one do you actually need?
Check the exact wording of whatever requirement sent you looking. "HSK Level 4" or "HSK 4 certificate" means the standard written exam — that's the vast majority of cases. Only sit HSKK if a requirement names it explicitly, since it's a separate registration and exam day.
